If you have a machine capable of properly running Windows Vista, and you don’t mind a little experimentation, I highly suggest you give Windows 7 a try. Windows 7 is available from Microsoft and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows7
I plan to give my thoughts on the new OS after I have had a chance to run it through some tests over the weekend. If you have it installed, let me know what you think of it. I have been running the beta for awhile now, and I must say, the RC (Release Candidate) performs very nicely. I just wish I had the hardware to be able to run all of the features that Windows 7 offers.

Starting next week, provided the servers stay up, expect to see Windows 7 RC 1 available from Microsoft for the low price of free. It’s just a release candidate, but it will give you a good idea as to what the final product will be. The Release Candidate will allow you to be up and running until the 1st of June, 2010.
For those of you that are still on Windows XP, Windows 7 offers many performance improvements, including enhancements to security and changes to the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to the change from Windows 98 to Windows XP, it takes some getting used to, but for many users of Vista, it should be a pleasant change. For those running and happy with Windows XP, I really can’t tell people to upgrade yet. DirectX 10 features that are not supported on Windows XP would be the only reason to upgrade, which mostly pertains to gaming right now.
If you have a spare machine, or don’t mind possibly have to re-install your current OS in June, I’d recommend giving it a try.

I just came across this great post from Digg.com. Being a tech, I can’t help but share ideas. Even if you don’t run Linux, this is one of those “to remember” type things.
Install Wine:
WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is an application layer for Linux that interprets the Windows API and DLLs into native Linux commands. This allows for programs made for Windows to be run in Linux!
In order to run Office 2007, Wine 1.1.9 (or newer) is required. It is currently in a development release. If you don’t have it installed already (this is very likely), go ahead and type the following commands, which will set it up for you:wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add –
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine cabextract
NOTE: On non-Debian based systems, this will not work. Please refer to this site for installation instructions. You should now have an installation of Wine 1.1.9 installed on your system. To confirm the version of Wine installed, type the following:
wine –version
Install winetricks:
Winetricks is a small SH script which will go on the internet and automatically fetch and install Microsoft DLLs and Libraries into Wine with almost no hassle at all! To download it directly, type the following commands:wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
chmod +x ./winetricks
Utilize winetricks:
This will setup all necessary libraries and DLLs that Office 2007 will need to run properly:./winetricks gdiplus riched20 riched30 msxml3 msxml4 msxml6 corefonts tahoma vb6run vcrun6 msi2
Please be patient while the downloads complete. This script is working hard and is saving hours of your time.
Insert Office 2007 Disk and Run Setup!
Now that we have all of the DLLs necessary to run the Installer, let us do so!wine pathToCD/setup.exe
From here on out, you should be good to go! The installer should run and install everything just as if it was a Windows system!

I have begun playing with Vue 7. I’m not fully sure of what I think of it, but so far, I’m having some fun. What do you think?

I know, I’ve been very lax at updating this site. I wish I had a good excuse, but honestly, I don’t. I had hoped that even with working two jobs, and doing some outside tech support, I would still have time for this site, but it has been falling into the wayside.
I’m also not sure if WordPress is the software I really want. In the future, this site will be partially used when I begin teaching again. I have used Black Board in the past, and it is available from the school, but it is limited on what can be done with it.
I am now beginning to experiment with Joomla. I’m not sure how I feel about it right now, as the management side takes a lot to get used to. Hopefully it will lead to something enjoyable. If you have any ideas for a good template to use, please let me know. You can use the “contact” me link above. You can see what I’m using for Joomla here.
